What is the+people® Coaching Programme
The +people® Coaching Programme is designed to help people understand the choices which they make and inspire them to make better ones. The+people® Coaching Programme enables individuals and teams to significantly improve their safety culture and overall performance and make the difference which makes the difference.
The +people® Coaching Programme is acclaimed extensively nationally and internationally and numerous organisations have factored this coaching approach into their cultural style.

+people® Coaching Programme Outline

The full Programme is split into four distinct phases:

1  Research

The first stage of coaching is rapport. +people® uses Research to gain rapport as well as providing a vehicle for feedback which enables an organisation to put a ‘peg in the ground’ which indicates ‘present state’.

The aim of the ‘Research’ stage is to involve as many people as possible, indeed to target the whole of the population as a ‘culture’ is the sum of all choices made within an organisation.  Although a ‘survey form’ is used, which is designed to measure attitude against energy levels, Setters have a very personal way of inviting involvement by ‘walking the forms’ around the organisation, meeting people and setting the seen for the Programme as a whole.
The +people® Research provides information on attitudes, the effectiveness of the safety management arrangements and common habit sets.

2    The Hub Day (‘Infection’ Event)
The purpose of the ‘Hub Day’ is to ‘holistically’ infect the whole of the population (Leaders, Managers, Supervisors, Core Teams and regular subcontractors), with the main elements of the+people® Programme, which comprise of:

  • +people®  ‘Mindset’ (how we think)
  • The ‘Currencies’ (dynamic tools designed for immediate application).

To initiate and sustain a ‘culture change’ the approach has to be inclusive at all levels and the ‘currencies’ shared by all.  You cannot change a culture by decree.

3    Organisational Coaching
Organisational Coaching is fundamentally different to training.  Training is predominantly the transfer of knowledge whereas coaching is helping people to understand and evoking the solutions from individuals and teams (experiential learning).
“Coaching adds creativity to competence”
The +people® Programme is designed to develop the performance of the whole of the organisation in a sustainable way through Focus Leaders (intimate members of the working group and Coaches (custodians of the process who provides support at all levels). Both of these roles are carried out by host employees following a programme of coaching carried out by the qualified Setters team.
Supervisors are coached in tandem with the Focus Leaders.

4    Monitor & Review
For all +people® Programmes the host organisation is encouraged to establish a Monitor & Review Group (MRG).  The purpose of this MRG is two fold:

  • To ensure that the Programme/Project keeps to timescales, keeps the Programme and produces the expected outcomes
  • To provide a forum for the Focus Leaders and Coaches to compare learning’s.

Why the +people® Coaching Programme works
Having declared that the +people® Coaching has functionality and works; we can also demonstrate how +people®  differentiates itself.  To understand +people®one needs to understand and ‘internalise’ some fundamental precepts:

  • That there is a powerful and inextricable link between Health & Safety Management systems, people and cultures
  • 98+% of all accidents / incidents are due to human factor i.e. not physical
  • In focusing on the human factor 99.7% of everything we do is subconsciously driven. By contrast traditional approaches focus on the conscious behaviours and fly in the face of the influence of the subconscious or cognitive processes. The focus of the +people® Programme is on subconscious competence or subconsciously safe routines i.e. automatically subconsciously safe routines
  • Therefore, ‘training’ in the traditional sense, does not work; ask yourself,  is it possible to change the attitude and behaviours of a person who has performed a task in a certain habitual way for years and years, simply by a one-off exposure to a skills training course?

Because most organisation have not been exposed to a true organisational coaching programme, the traditional approach that has been adopted is to take Senior Managers from their organisation and put them through a form of ‘behavioural training’; allowing them then to impart their learning’s down through the organisation; inevitably it is rare that this process is followed through.
However, the key for any true behavioural approach is sustainability and the ability to make this holistic thus incorporating the behaviours of the entire organisation.  In our experience, unless a top down strategy, bottom up tactics is adopted, with a structured monitor and review mechanism; one-off exposure will not achieve the desired results over a long-term period.  Repeat exposure is vital to ensure an organisation can become self-managing and own their health and safety culture.  Key to this culture change is coaching.
